A Day in the Life of a Camp Vertica Athlete
Life at Camp Vertica is built around movement, growth, and outdoor adventure. Each day begins at camp with breakfast and a plan for the day before heading out to hike to the boulders. Mornings are focused on climbing: projecting, skill progression, spotting practice, and applying gym training to real rock. Coaches work closely with small groups (1:3 ratio) to provide personalized instruction in movement, technique, risk awareness, and decision-making in natural environments.
After lunch and a rest reset, afternoons shift toward connection and exploration. Campers rotate through fun group challenges, team-building games, and structured lessons on topics like Leave No Trace, access and conservation, nutrition, and outdoor skills. Some days include excursion adventures like moderate hikes to waterfalls, scenic overlooks, or other stops that break up travel and expand the experience beyond climbing. Campers also take turns helping with camp responsibilities, including meal prep and campsite setup, building independence and shared ownership of the week.
Evenings bring more climbing or community time back at camp. We gather for dinner, reflect on the day, and wind down with campfires, songs, treats, and occasionally a climbing film projected under the stars. Throughout the week, athletes may participate in stewardship opportunities such as trail work or learning from local climbing organizations about access and conservation.
Every day is intentionally designed to balance challenge and fun so Vertica athletes leave stronger, more confident, and more connected to the outdoors than when they arrived.
Unplugged & Present
Camp Vertica is a fully unplugged experience, no cell phones, iPads, smart watches, or personal devices. We believe the mountains of Grayson Highlands State Park offer something far more valuable than screen time: presence, connection, and real adventure. Disconnecting allows campers to fully engage with their surroundings, build stronger friendships, take healthy risks, and develop independence without digital distractions. Campers are encouraged to bring a digital or disposable camera to capture memories, as well as books, journals, card games, or other creative activities for downtime.
We know parent communication is important, so families will receive a midweek email from their child’s go-to counselor with updates on how they’re doing, friendships they’re building, and highlights from the week. Stepping away from technology creates space for confidence, reflection, and deeper connection to nature and to each other.
Camp Vertica Risk Management
At Camp Vertica, the health, safety, and well-being of your athlete are our top priorities. We operate small groups with a 1:3 camper-to-staff ratio, and all staff are certified in CPR & First Aid, and climbing safety. At least one staff member will have their Wilderness First Responder Certification. Every activity, from bouldering to hiking and camping, is carefully supervised, with clear procedures in place for emergencies, weather, and health concerns.
All staff undergo background checks, mandatory reporting training, and pre-camp safety drills. Campers sleep in gender-separated tents, and staff maintain on-call supervision overnight. Meals and snacks are prepared with attention to allergies and dietary restrictions, and first aid is always on hand. In the event of an injury or other emergency, staff follow a tiered response plan to ensure prompt care and parent notification, including access to EMS and off-grid communication devices if needed. We also focus on preventative safety: gear is inspected before each activity, campfires and cooking are supervised, and campers are taught safe outdoor practices. Simply put, Camp Vertica is designed to give campers a safe, fun, and growth-filled outdoor experience while keeping parents informed and reassured every step of the way.
