Unplugged & Present

Camp Vertica is a fully unplugged experience, no cell phones, iPads, smart watches, or personal devices. We believe the mountains of Grayson Highlands State Park offer something far more valuable than screen time: presence, connection, and real adventure. Disconnecting allows campers to fully engage with their surroundings, build stronger friendships, take healthy risks, and develop independence without digital distractions. Campers are encouraged to bring a digital or disposable camera to capture memories, as well as books, journals, card games, or other creative activities for downtime.

We know parent communication is important, so families will receive a midweek email from their child’s go-to counselor with updates on how they’re doing, friendships they’re building, and highlights from the week. Stepping away from technology creates space for confidence, reflection, and deeper connection to nature and to each other.
